iPhone Camera Not Working / Black Screen: Module or Logic Board?
If your iPhone camera shows a black screen, shakes, or freezes the app, the camera module isn't always the culprit. How to make the part-vs-board call systematically.
"Camera won't open", "black screen", "photos are blurry and shaking" — the first reflex with these complaints is replacing the camera module. Sometimes that's right; but if the module is fine, the fault sits in the camera power and data lines on the logic board, and a new module changes nothing.
This guide covers the isolation test that should happen before any part swap: is the fault in the module, the connector, or the board?
1. Pin down the symptom
Different symptoms point in different directions:
- Camera app fully black → module, connector, or a power rail.
- Rear camera black, front works (or vice versa) → the fault is most likely in the dead side's chain, not system-wide.
- Image present but shaking / won't focus → usually the module's optics/focus side; less often an unstable supply.
- Phone freezes or reboots when camera opens → suspected data-line fault or a shorted rail; this picture points at the board.
Classifying the symptom correctly is half the diagnosis.
2. Cross-test with a known-good module
The fastest way to separate part from board is fitting a known-good (test) module:
- Camera works with the test module → the original module is faulty; replacement fixes it.
- Same symptom persists with the test module → the fault is on the board; replacing the module is wasted money.
Skipping this step and fitting a new module straight away is how "I replaced it but it's still broken" cases are born. The cross-test is the standard first move in board-level workshops.
3. Connector and socket inspection
Camera flex connectors are small and fragile. Under the microscope, check:
- Are any socket pins crushed, broken or oxidized?
- On previously opened devices, is there pry damage (lifted pin, bent socket)?
- Any crease or tear on the flex cable itself?
A single crushed pin is enough for the camera to go completely undetected. Connector damage is especially common on devices with liquid or drop history.
4. Board side: measure the power rails
With module and connector ruled out, the board is next. A camera demands several supply voltages, all generated on the logic board:
- Each rail is measured in diode mode against GND — any short?
- Measurement points come from the schematic/boardview; if one supply is missing, you trace back to the area that generates it.
- If the phone freezes/reboots when the camera opens, a shorted rail may be tripping the device into protection.
A missing rail usually traces to a small passive part (filter/capacitor) or a supply IC — with correct diagnosis, the fix is a precise, small intervention.
Why does the order matter?
The expensive mistake in camera faults is swapping parts without isolation: a module is replaced, nothing changes; a second module is tried, still nothing; finally the phone gets labeled "unrepairable". Yet the fault may be a single supply line.
The systematic order (symptom → cross-test → connector → rail measurement) avoids dumping needless part costs on the customer and protects the technician's reputation.
